High resolution non-contrast MR angiography of the arteries and veins of the abdomen and chest is achieved with VASC-ASL. This is a spin labeling technique that uses a selective IR pulse to tag blood signal. The tagged blood acts as its own contrast agent. A choice of two acquisition options, subtracted or un-subtracted, serves to null signal except for inflowing blood, thus suppressing venous or arterial flow and background tissue. VASC-ASL is a great complement to an already robust vascular suite for those patients that are not candidates for MR contrast agents for health related reasons (renal insufficiency).
